slipsooth

slip
an accidental lapse of the tongue
+
sooth
truth (Old English sōþ — still in soothsayer)
the truth a slip tells
This tool's namesake, and verisleight's mirror-twin. Verisleight is truth arranged, by someone, to deceive. A slipsooth is error arranged, by no one, that leads home — the meaning a later, lazier drift accidentally digs back up. Reading a word straight until the buried truth surfaces: that is the whole machine.
